Crohn s disease is a disease where inflammation develops in parts of the intestine leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and fatigue. Inflammation may be mild, in many cases, but can sometimes be severe, requiring strong medication or an operation to remove an affected part of the intestine. Crohn s disease is one of two conditions known as inflammatory bowel disease (or “IBD), ulcerative colitis, another being. The symptoms and effects are similar to gastroenteritis (food poisoning), but differ in that are not due to an infection and persist for a long time or even treated.

Crohn s disease tends to present initially in the teens and twenties, with another peak incidence in the fifties to seventies, although the disease can occur at any age. There is no known drug or surgical cure for Crohn s disease. Treatment options are restricted to controlling symptoms, maintaining remission and relapse prevention. The disease was named after American gastroenterologist Burrill Bernard Crohn, who in 1932 along with two colleagues, described a series of patients with inflammation of the ileum, the area most commonly affected by the disease. For this reason, the disease has also been called regional ileitis or regional enteritis. The condition, however, had previously been independently described in medical literature by others. The most notable case was in 1904 by Polish surgeon Antoni Leśniowski for whom the condition is called alternately Leśniowski-Crohn s disease in Polish literature.
